MTV Video Music Awards 2023: nomination, performer, dove vederli

Il Prudential Center di Newark scalpita. Musica nella sua somma espressione pop, performance di adrenalina e meraviglia, tributi pirotecnici e soprattutto premi e consacrazioni per gli MTV Video Music Awards 2023, in programma in New Jersey nella notte tra il 12 e il 13 settembre. Con una granitica certezza: Taylor Swift sarà ancora regina. La superstar dei record ha ricevuto ben undici nomination e cercherà di replicare la vittoria del ‘Video of the Year’ dopo che l’anno scorso è diventata l’unica artista a vincere tre volte in una delle categorie più amate.

Ecco tutto quello che c’è da sapere sulla 40ª edizione degli MTV Video Music Awards.

Gli artisti con più nomination

Gli MTV VMAs 2023 celebrano il lavoro degli artisti il cui impatto culturale ha trasformato l’industria musicale negli ultimi dodici mesi generando conversazioni globali, premiando le canzoni e i video musicali più amati. E non poteva che essere lei a dominare le nomination, Taylor Swift, che a 33 anni, viso angelico e capelli lunghi biondi, sta trasformato i suoi concerti in pellegrinaggi, con il suo Eras Tour destinato a infrangere ogni primato con oltre un miliardo e 400 milioni di dollari di incasso, superando il precedente record appartenuto a Elton John.

Taylor Swift domina con undici candidature (incluse le categorie social), seguita con otto da SZA, la cantautrice di Saint Louis che sta per riprendere il suo SOS Tour, appena portato in Europa. Con sei nomination ci sono Blackpink, Doja Cat, Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj, Olivia Rodrigo, con cinque Kim Petras e Sam Smith, con quattro Beyoncé, Diddy, Drake, Ice Spice, Karol G, Metro Boomin, Shakira e Tomorrow X Together.

È record di candidati per la prima volta ai VMAs, 35 in tutto, con molteplici candidature per le new entry: Kim Petras ne ha cinque – come sopra -, tre Metro Boomin e Rema. Tra gli altri artisti nominati per la prima volta ci sono Ayra Starr, GloRilla, Ice Spice, Peso Pluma, Reneé Rapp, Yung Miami, Aespa, boygenius, Burna Boy, Davido, Eslabon Armado, Fletcher, Fifty Fifty, Jvke, Lauren Spencer Smith, Musa Keys, PinkPantheress, Saucy Santana, Stephen Sanchez e Toosii.

Chi presenterà gli MTV VMAs 2023

Sono tanti e d’appeal i presentatori di questa edizione degli MTV Video Music Awards: tra loro Bebe Rexha, Charli D’Amelio, Coco Jones, Dixie D’Amelio, Emily Ratajkowski, French Montana, GloRilla, Ice Spice, Jared Leto, Madelyn Cline, Rita Ora, Sabrina Carpenter e Nicki Minaj.

Il pre-show dei VMAs 2023, in onda in diretta da 00:30, sarà condotto dalla star del rap Saweetie insieme a Nessa, Dometi Pongo e Kevan Kenney. 

I performer al Prudential Center in New Jersey

Gli MTV Video Music Awards tornano al Prudential Center di Newark, New Jersey, che già li aveva ospitati nel 2022 e nel 2019. Dal rock italico dei Måneskin al K-Pop degli Stray Kids, dal reggaeton di Karol G all’hip hop da cinque Grammy di Lil Wayne fino alla sensualità latina di Shakira: ecco i performer dei VMAs 2023.

Dopo la consacrazione del 2022, con la storica vittoria per il ‘Best Alternative’, i Måneskin presenteranno in anteprima mondiale il loro nuovo singolo Honey (Are you coming?), uscito il 1° settembre. Mentre il loro ultimo album Rush! è sulla soglia di un miliardo di streaming, la band romana è in lizza per il ‘Best Rock’, nomination che fai dei Måneskin il primo gruppo italiano a essere nominato per due anni consecutivi in una categoria principale dello show.

Gli Stray Kids, tra i gruppi più influenti del K-Pop, si esibiranno con il brano S-Class, tratto dal loro ultimo album 5-Star. Gli otto ragazzi sudcoreani sono in corsa per ‘Best K-Pop’, la stessa categoria che nel 2022 valse loro la prima nomination ai VMAs.

Karol G invece darà vita a Bichota Season. La cantautrice colombiana, prima donna ad aver debuttato al primo posto della classifica Billboard 200 con un album in lingua spagnola, interromperà il suo tour negli stadi per competere per la sua prima vittoria ai VMAs dopo aver ottenuto tre nomination, tra cui quella di ‘Artist of the Year’.

E poi l’habitué degli MTV Video Music Awards, Demi Lovato, che in carriera ha collezionato 14 nomination ai VMAs. Ora è in lizza per le categorie ‘Best Pop’ e ‘Video for Good’. Torna per la sua prima esibizione durante lo show dopo sei anni, pochi giorni prima dell’uscita del suo nuovo album Revamped che contiene le versioni rock dei suoi singoli di successo.

Lil Wayne, vincitore multi-platino di cinque premi Grammy, oltre 120 milioni di dischi venduti in tutto il mondo, torna sul palco dei VMAs dopo oltre un decennio presentando per la prima volta dal vivo il suo nuovo singolo uscito il 1° settembre Kat Food. Con all’attivo ben 14 nomination, concorre ancora una volta nella categoria ‘Best Hip-Hop’, premio che ha vinto per la prima volta nel 2008.

Anitta, che punta a bissare la vittoria nella categoria ‘Best Latin’, presenterà il suo funk brasiliano eseguendo un medley di successi tratti dal suo ultimo disco Funk Generation: A Favela Love Story. 

Tra i performer non mancano Doja Cat, quattro volte vincitrice dei VMAs e dei Grammy Awards, già 23 volte candidata e in lizza per cinque premi (l’ultima volta ha vinto nel 2022 per la ‘Miglior coreografia’), e la regina del country multi-platino Kelsea Ballerini, che propone in anteprima mondiale una performance tratta dalla versione estesa del suo ultimo EP Rolling Up The Welcome Mat (For Good) proprio nel giorno del suo trentesimo compleanno.

Con sei nomination, Olivia Rodrigo torna sul palco dei VMAs dopo la pubblicazione del suo secondo album Guts. 
Nicki Minaj riprende il suo doppio ruolo di presentatrice e performer.

I Tomorrow X Together presentano in anteprima un nuovo singolo e saranno il primo gruppo K-Pop a trasformarsi musicalmente per un’esibizione internazionale con la superstar brasiliana Anitta. In attesao del loro terzo album in studio The Name Chapter: Freefall, in uscita a ottobre.

La superstar del pop latino Shakira riceverà il Video Vanguard Award e per l’occasione si esibirà dal vivo, tornando sul palco di MTV dopo 17 anni.
Similmente il magnate Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, pioniere dell’hip hop, riceverà il Global Icon Award e ringrazierà con un’esibizione.

Dove vedere gli MTV Video Music Awards 2023

Gli MTV Video Music Awards 2023 saranno trasmessi in contemporanea in 150 Paesi. In Italia si potranno vedere in diretta in lingua originale nella notte tra il 12 e il 13 settembre a partire dalle ore 2 su MTV (canale Sky 131 e in streaming su NOW) e su MTV Music (canale Sky 132 e 704). Saranno anticipati dal pre-show a partire dalle 00.30. 

Le repliche sottotitolate andranno in onda su MTV (canale Sky 131 e in streaming su NOW) il 13 settembre alle 22, il 15 settembre alle 23.55 e il 17 settembre alle 7.35, su MTV Music (canale Sky 132 e 704) il 13 settembre alle 22 con la replica del pre-show e alle 23.30 lo show integrale, il 14 settembre alle 12, il 15 settembre alle 22, il 16 settembre alle 19 e il 17 settembre alle 13 e su VH1 (Canale Sky 715) il 13 settembre alle 23.
I Video Music Awards 2023 saranno successivamente disponibili in streaming anche su Paramount+ Italia.

Sono 15 le categorie degli MTV Video Music Awards 2023, tutte gender-neutral, tra cui la nuovissima categoria ‘Best Afrobeats’. Tra le più ambite: ‘Video of the Year’ e ‘Artist of the Year’. Votano i fan su vote.mtv.com. Il voto per ‘Best New Artist’ rimarrà attivo anche durante lo spettacolo di martedì 12 settembre.
